If you last updated your SEO strategy before last year, it is already out of date, and probably more than you think. The past eighteen months have brought more change to how people find businesses online than the previous several years combined, and most of that change centers on one thing: AI.

Traditional SEO was built around a fairly stable set of rules. Use the right keywords, build quality backlinks, structure your site cleanly, and earn your place in the rankings. Those fundamentals still matter, but they are no longer the whole picture. Search engines now generate AI written summaries for a large share of queries, and those summaries are assembled by pulling from sources the AI model considers clear, credible, and well organized. A page that ranks on page one but is not written in a way an AI model can easily extract and cite is increasingly invisible in the part of the results customers actually read first.

At the same time, the way people search has changed. A growing number of customers are skipping the search engine entirely and asking an AI assistant directly for a recommendation. They are not looking at a page of results at all. They are trusting whatever answer the assistant gives them, which means your business needs to be part of that answer before the conversation even happens.

This is the practical reality behind a phrase that sounds abstract until it affects your business directly: if you are not being seen by AI, you are not being seen by potential customers. It is no longer enough to be findable by a search engine. You have to be understandable and trustworthy to the systems now standing between your business and the people looking for it.

The good news is that the fundamentals of good SEO and the requirements of AI visibility overlap more than they conflict. Clear, accurate, well organized information about your business benefits both. What has changed is the bar. Adequate is no longer enough. The businesses investing in this now are the ones that will be the answer, not just a link, eighteen months from now.
